My Coffee Perspective

First of all, I am not on a keto diet. Instead of dieting, our family focuses on a healthy lifestyle for body, mind and spirit, including our food intake. We do however, enjoy the benefits of age old health “hacks” in which modern science is continually verifying value, like the benefits of clean coffee with butter and coconut oil.

Like many, we run a busy lives. My husband works more hours weekly than most. I homeschool our daughter year round, in addition to active extra curricular activities, including jiu jitsu, gymnastics, bicycling, and swimming. I also cook almost all our meals daily, and mostly from scratch. We aim to use as many fresh organic and GMO-free (genetically modified organism) ingredients as possible. We avoid as much packaged and processed food as possible, especially with main meals.

Life can be exhausting, right? And my husband and I are also in the next half century of our lives. That’s why we require clean, healthy, and efficient ingredients to support our vitality. Ergo, in steps what is most commonly known as keto coffee and it’s fabulous! We used to make our coffee with organic coconut oil, and more recently we introduced grass fed butter with C8 Mct (medium-chain triglyceride) Oil from coconut oil as our creamer. We also add some stevia drops for sweetner. But let’s start with just coffee first…

Coffee Benefits

Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world, and it has been studied extensively for its potential health benefits. Here are some of the benefits associated with moderate coffee consumption:

  1. Increased Alertness and Cognitive Function: The most well-known benefit of coffee is its ability to enhance alertness and cognitive function due to its caffeine content. Caffeine is a natural stimulant that can improve focus, concentration, and overall mental performance.
  2. Antioxidant Properties: Coffee is rich in antioxidants, such as chlorogenic acid and polyphenols, which help neutralize harmful free radicals in the body. Antioxidants contribute to overall cellular health and may have protective effects against oxidative stress and certain diseases.
  3. Reduced Risk of Certain Diseases: Numerous studies suggest that moderate coffee consumption is associated with a reduced risk of certain diseases, including:
    • Type 2 Diabetes: Some research indicates that regular coffee consumption is linked to a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
    • Parkinson’s Disease: Coffee consumption has been linked to a reduced risk of Parkinson’s disease, a neurodegenerative disorder.
    • Alzheimer’s Disease: Some studies suggest that coffee consumption may be associated with a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
    • Liver Health: Coffee consumption has been linked to a reduced risk of liver diseases, including liver cirrhosis and liver cancer.
    • Cardiovascular Health: Some evidence suggests that moderate coffee consumption might be associated with a lower risk of certain cardiovascular issues, such as heart disease.
  4. Physical Performance: The caffeine in coffee can temporarily enhance physical performance by increasing adrenaline levels and mobilizing fatty acids from fat tissues, providing an additional energy source for exercise.
  5. Mood Enhancement: Coffee consumption has been associated with a lower risk of depression and improved mood in some individuals. Caffeine’s stimulating effects may contribute to this benefit.
  6. Reduced Risk of Stroke: Some studies suggest that moderate coffee consumption is associated with a decreased risk of stroke.
  7. Potential Longevity: Some research indicates that regular coffee drinkers may have a lower risk of premature death, although the exact mechanisms are still being studied.
  8. Protection Against Certain Cancers: Some studies have suggested that coffee consumption may be associated with a reduced risk of certain types of cancer, such as liver and colorectal cancer.

It’s important to note that while coffee offers potential health benefits, individual responses to coffee can vary. Additionally, excessive consumption of coffee (more than 3-4 cups per day for most adults) can lead to negative effects such as anxiety, sleep disturbances, and digestive issues. As with any dietary choice, moderation is key. If you have specific health concerns or conditions, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before making significant changes to your coffee consumption habits.

In our family, we do our research, try things out, and make the necessary modifications along the way. We are grateful to include the advice from medical professionals as we lead and assess our well being. Which takes us to the next level up, keto coffee…

What is Keto Coffee?

Keto coffee, also known as “bulletproof coffee,” is a beverage that combines coffee with fats, typically butter and/or coconut oil, to create a high-fat, low-carbohydrate drink. The concept behind keto coffee is to provide sustained energy and promote ketosis, a metabolic state in which the body primarily uses fats for fuel instead of carbohydrates. Here are some potential benefits attributed to keto coffee:

  1. Sustained Energy: The combination of caffeine from coffee and the healthy fats from sources like butter or coconut oil can provide a slow release of energy, helping you stay alert and focused throughout the day.
  2. Appetite Suppression: The high-fat content in keto coffee may help curb hunger and reduce appetite, making it easier for some individuals to control their calorie intake and stick to their ketogenic diet.
  3. Enhanced Ketosis: Consuming a high-fat drink like keto coffee can help maintain ketosis or promote the transition into ketosis, a state where the body burns fat for energy due to the limited carbohydrate intake.
  4. Mental Clarity: Some people report improved mental clarity and cognitive function after consuming keto coffee. This could be due to the combination of caffeine and healthy fats, which might support brain function.
  5. Weight Management: The high-fat content of keto coffee can contribute to a feeling of fullness and satiety, potentially aiding in weight management by reducing overall calorie consumption.
  6. Convenience: Keto coffee can be a convenient option for those following a ketogenic diet, as it combines caffeine and fats into a single drink, reducing the need for separate meals or snacks.
  7. Potential for Increased Fat Burning: The combination of caffeine and fats in keto coffee might enhance the body’s ability to burn fat for energy, potentially aiding in weight loss efforts.

It’s important to note that while keto coffee has gained popularity and anecdotal support for its benefits, scientific research is continually expanding. Additionally, individual responses to this type of beverage can vary. If you’re considering incorporating keto coffee into your diet, it’s recommended to do so as part of a well-rounded and balanced eating plan. As with any dietary changes, it’s a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional or registered dietitian to ensure that it aligns with your health goals and needs. Fortunately, the next ingredient is derived from the magic of magnificent coconut.

I often say if I was stranded on a deserted island and could have one food to eat, I’d choose coconuts. They are amazing, but that’s another story.

So what is C8 MCT Oil?

C8 MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) oil, also known as caprylic acid, is a type of fatty acid derived from coconut oil. MCT oil is typically derived from coconut oil through a process called fractionation. Fractionation involves separating the different components of coconut oil based on their different melting points. It has gained popularity due to its potential health benefits and unique properties. Here are some of the benefits often associated with C8 MCT oil:

  1. Quick Energy Source: C8 MCT oil is rapidly absorbed and metabolized by the body, providing a quick and efficient source of energy. It is easily converted into ketones, which are used by the brain and muscles for energy. This makes it a popular choice for people following ketogenic diets or looking for an energy boost.
  2. Ketosis Support: Ketosis is a metabolic state where the body primarily uses fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. C8 MCT oil can help support ketosis by increasing the production of ketones in the body, which is particularly beneficial for those following a ketogenic diet for weight management or other health reasons.
  3. Improved Cognitive Function: Ketones produced from C8 MCT oil can cross the blood-brain barrier and provide an alternative energy source for the brain. Some people report improved cognitive function, mental clarity, and focus after consuming C8 MCT oil.
  4. Appetite Regulation: MCTs, including C8, may help with appetite regulation. They can promote a feeling of fullness and reduce hunger, potentially aiding in weight management efforts.
  5. Gut Health: C8 MCT oil has been suggested to have antimicrobial properties, which could potentially support a healthy gut by promoting a balanced gut microbiome.
  6. Antioxidant Properties: Caprylic acid, the main component of C8 MCT oil, has antioxidant properties that may help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in the body.
  7. Digestive Support: MCTs can be easily absorbed without requiring bile for digestion, which can be beneficial for individuals with compromised digestive systems or conditions that affect fat absorption.
  8. Athletic Performance: Some athletes and fitness enthusiasts use C8 MCT oil as a pre-workout supplement due to its quick energy release and potential to enhance endurance.

Why Grass Fed Butter?

Grass-fed butter is derived from the milk of cows that primarily graze on natural grass and forage, as opposed to being fed a diet primarily composed of grains or other processed feed. This difference in diet can lead to several potential benefits of grass-fed butter compared to other types of butter, such as conventional butter from grain-fed cows. It’s important to note that while these benefits are often discussed, more scientific research is needed to establish some of these claims definitively. Here are some potential benefits of grass-fed butter:

  1. Nutrient Composition: Grass-fed butter may have a different nutrient composition compared to butter from grain-fed cows. It is believed to have higher levels of certain nutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), and antioxidants like vitamin E.
  2. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Grass-fed butter is thought to have higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for heart health, brain function, and reducing inflammation. Omega-3s are typically found in higher quantities in grass and forage.
  3. Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA): CLA is a type of fatty acid that has been associated with potential health benefits, including improved body composition, reduced inflammation, and better blood sugar regulation. Grass-fed butter is believed to contain higher levels of CLA compared to butter from grain-fed cows.
  4. Vitamin K2: Grass-fed dairy products, including butter, may contain higher levels of vitamin K2. Vitamin K2 plays a role in bone health, heart health, and proper calcium utilization in the body.
  5. Antioxidants: Grass-fed butter is suggested to have higher levels of antioxidants like vitamin E, which can help protect cells from damage caused by oxidative stress.
  6. No Artificial Hormones and Antibiotics: Some grass-fed dairy products come from cows that are raised without the use of synthetic hormones and antibiotics commonly used in conventional livestock farming.
  7. Animal Welfare and Environmental Factors: Supporting grass-fed butter production may align with sustainable and ethical farming practices, as cows are allowed to graze on natural pasture, promoting their well-being and potentially reducing the environmental impact associated with intensive grain feeding.
  8. Improved Flavor Profile: Some people find that grass-fed butter has a richer and more complex flavor compared to conventional butter, due to the cows’ varied diet.

Nutritional composition of grass-fed butter can vary based on factors such as the cow’s diet, breed, and farming practices. While there are potential benefits associated with grass-fed butter, individual dietary preferences, health goals, and values will influence whether it’s the right choice for you. Ideally, organic, GMO free grass fed butter from happy pasture grazing cows that are treated humanely is best. We get our from Costco.
