Eating healthy is one part of the picture to making proactive choices on your family’s health and well being, but what are you doing about the consumable household products you use to clean your dishes, clothes and bodies? You may want to Live Clean, but are you really? Have you taken a good look at the labels and do you know what all those big words really mean?

I have found that through the years most people trust that if something is for sale on a shelf in a store, that it is good for us. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Not everyone is in agreement on what ingredients are safe to use, nor do some people care since profit all too often eclipses safety and efficacy. However, when you spend the time to do your research, you will find companies that care about people and the impact their products and packaging have on our planet.

DIY or BUY?

You can also make your own products at home, however, I know there are only so many hours in the day and many of us are just too dang tired to think about making our own soap, cleaners or lotion after a long day at work, whether it be taking care of the kids or having returned from a corporate career.

I support natural, handmade, locally sourced products as much as possible, but you also have to have value balance in your life. I used to brew my own kombucha and pick up vegetables weekly from a local Community Service Agriculture farm. Both of the Do It Yourself “DIY” resources are absolutely awesome and I am so grateful to live in a country with these options. However, our time is limited and each chapter in our life creates new priorities in which sacrifices must be made to enjoy balance in daily life. We simply cannot do it all.

My current chapter finds me ever so busy with a delightfully adventurous toddler who leaves me with little time to myself, so I am ever so grateful to other people who have engineered companies and products that are natural, safe, chemical free and effective to help me keep my family and home clean.

First of all, I highly recommend getting the app and/or signing up to receive Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) information. This is an incredible resource with a mission to empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment. With breakthrough research and education, they drive consumer choice and civic action with detailed information on ingredients, products, water safety, cell phone safety and the list goes on.

Now for the fun stuff. There’s certainly lots to choose from out there, however, I was introduced to a brand that has been green before it was popular, who eliminated countless controversial ingredients like parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, phythalates, who uses recyclable packaging free of BPA and all the other substitutes no one really knows about, who has a list of over 3000 ingredients that they do not use, and who balance safety with efficacy, because what good is it if you have great ingredients but they fail to perform?
